Skyrim Style Player Compass and Quest Markers | Weekly Update #22

This week, there was a lot of focus on adding improvements that came up in a recent playtest, and the number one complaint was that the player had no idea where things were.

Player Compass

So as a first step towards fixing that, I’ve added a Compass this week!
For the first iteration, I went for a Skyrim-style one-dimensional compass at the top of the screen.

You can see here that it currently tracks all villagers, for example. Of course, they get more distinct icons in the future.

The icons also fade out and size down the further the farther you get from the object or person in the world – making it more clear what’s near you at any point.

Quest Markers

Now that we have a way of showing the player where things are, we obviously also need something to indicate where they actually have to go – enter Quest Markers.

They show up both in the world and on the compass to guide the player exactly to their quest location.

While I like the 1D Compass, I think a 2D Compass would perhaps be even more useful for this game—giving the player more details on where resources and quests are located in the world—so that’s next!

See you next week for more cool updates – there will even be little hint to a in-game secret 🤫😁
