Modular Austrian House Update | Weekly Update #29

This week I show you something neat and artsy I have been up to recently, a new modular house setup!

I have learned the basics from a GameDev.tv course about how to go about setting up a modular building; however, that version was without any interior setup and the walls having no thickness, which sadly doesn’t work for my use case.

So I went to work and made a new version – with wall thickness and interior walls. The first fun challenge is that now you have to worry way more about intersecting wall sections and z-fighting… yay, so much fun πŸ˜‰

To get around this, I decided to have different modules: some where the interior walls will be the same length as the outside wall and some where the interior wall is shorter. This avoids any kind of z-fighting on corners as the interior wall won’t reach the outside wall of the other module.

I have seen this approach in some asset packs, and it seems to make sense so I rolled with it πŸ˜„

Once I had all my modules in place, it was time to create the first rooms to eventually make up a whole house in the end.

To have some idea what I am doing (I already have 5-in-1 jobs as an indie dev, I don’t also need to become an architect πŸ˜„), I create a pureRef reference board to get the proper Austrian-style house right.

So following my reference and utilizing my modules, I kept going until I had a decent enough house together. There was a lot of back and forth and adjusting along the way to make it feel ‘right’.

Things that are really important to me for that are:
> The ground floor being made out of stone/brick.
> Upper floors made out of wood
> Balconies on at least one floor (for rainy day coffee breaks and flower pots 😁)
> Wooden roof decorations (ideally cute ones πŸ˜‰)
> Cute window shutters

I think it turned out pretty decent and ‘Austria-Coded’ πŸ˜„
Honestly, I would love to have a little book and reading nook in that attic 😁

One of the adjustments I made at a later point was adding a more finished and less rustic railing for the balcony. It also gave me the opportunity to add some more subtle heart decorations that go perfectly with the roof decorations ☺️.

And the final step was then to add it into the game and add interactive items and finishing touches i.e. doors and flowers.

✨ Taddaaa ✨

I think I have come very far from my first house model to this latest one, and it only took a couple of weeks and a good tutorial. 😁

Thank you for reading and have an awesome week out there πŸŒˆπŸ‘‹

  1. That is an incredible amount of personal development in modelling houses πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ and the heart decorations are super cute too 😊

Loving the reference board as well, can really see the inspirations in there, you manage to pull it off so well.

Also yes please to a nice rainy-day coffee break on a balcony 😊
